National News

1. NITI Aayog Released Paper On ‘National Health Stack’

i. The central government think tank NITI Aayog has unveiled the blueprint of ‘National Health Stack’ (NHS), a shared digital healthcare infrastructure. The blueprint is in line with the implementation of the Centre’s flagship scheme Ayushman Bharat and other public healthcare programmes in the country.
ii. According to a consultation paper titled ‘National Health Stack Strategy an Approach’, the National Health Stack will facilitate the collection of comprehensive healthcare data across the country.

2. Indian Railways Introduces 1st Double Stack Dwarf Container Service

i. Under the guidance of Piyush Goyal, Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Railways and Coal, in order to capture the lost traffic through the new delivery model for domestic cargo, Indian Railways has introduced Double Stack Dwarf Container Services. 
ii. This train was booked from the Reliance Rail Siding at Kanalus to Rewari in the state of Haryana. Due to this Double Stacked Dwarf Container service, Indian Railways has received increased revenue of Rs. 18.50 lakhs.

3. Six Universities Granted ‘Institute of Eminence’ Status

i. The Union Government has granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status to six institutions including 3 from Public Sector and 3 from Private Sector.
ii. The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendations given by an Empowered Expert Committee (EEC). 
Three Public Universities granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status:
1. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay, 
2. IIT-Delhi, 
3. IISc Bangalore.
Three Private Universities granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status:
1. Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation (recommended for a letter of intent), 
2. BITS Pilani, 
3. Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

i. India and South Korea signed 11 Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) during South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s visit to India.
ii. The 11 MoUs signed between the two countries are: 
1. Upgraded Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was signed to facilitate ongoing negotiations on upgrading the India-RoK (Republic of Korea) CEPA by identifying key areas for trade liberalization (including shrimp, molluscs and processed fish).
5. India & South Korea Signed 5 MoUs In Field Of Science and Technology

i. India and South Korea have signed five MoUs in the field of Science and Technology in New Delhi. Science and Technology Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan and his South Korean counterpart You Young Min signed three MoUs which are Programme of Cooperation 2018-21, Establishment of Future Strategy Group and Cooperation in Bio-technology and Bio-economy.
ii. Two other MoUs were signed between Council of Scientific and  Industrial Research and South Korean National Research Council for Science and  Technology and IIT Mumbai and Korea Institute of Science and Technology, to further accelerate future-oriented cooperation.

6. International Round Table Conference on Data for New India Held in New Delhi

i. The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has organised a two-day International Round Table Conference on ‘Data for New India’ in New Delhi. Such a Conference was organized in India for the first time.
ii. The objective of the Round Table Conference was to identify innovative ideas for improving the statistical system in India, taking cue from the best practices followed in advanced countries like Canada, UK and Australia. The Conference was inaugurated by D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Union Minister of Statistics & Programme Implementation.




International News

7. World’s Oldest Colours Discovered

i. Scientists have discovered the world’s oldest colours. 1.1 billion-year-old bright pink pigments, extracted from rocks deep beneath the Sahara desert in Africa, have finally been traced.
ii. The team from the Australian National University (ANU) discovered the oldest colours in the geological record.

8. Asian Development Bank Approves 503 million USD Project For Bihar

i. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved 503-million US Dollar lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad-Bhojpur region of Bihar which would benefit the agriculture sector immensely in the region.
ii. Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister RK Singh held a meeting with the officials from the ADB and the finance ministry to review the progress of lining project of the Son canal.

9. Telecom Department Clears Vodafone-Idea Merger With Riders

i. The telecom ministry approved the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular Ltd. that will create the country’s largest mobile services operator. The Department of Telecom has cleared the Vodafone-Idea merger, but both companies will have to meet conditions for final approval.
ii. The combined operations of Idea and Vodafone will create the country’s largest telecom operator worth over $23 billion. Vodafone will own 45.1% stake in the combined entity, while Kumar Mangalam Birla-led Aditya Birla Group and Idea shareholders would have 26% and 28.9%, respectively.

10. Prof. Sandeep Sancheti Takes Charge As President Of AIU

i. Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, Vice Chancellor of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) has assumed charge as the 97th President of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
ii. The AIU has currently more than 720 members represented by Vice Chancellors. The AIU facilitates coordination and mutual consultation among Universities as well as acting as a liaison with Central and State governments.
