Today India is celebrating its 73rd Army Day on 15 January 2021. In the year 1949 Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as commander in chief of the Indian army from General Francis Butcher (The last commander-in-chief of India). This year the Indian Army organized a marathon “Vijay Run” to commemorate Swarnim Vijay Varsh Celebrations of India’s resounding victory over Pakistan in 1971.
On this day we honor the soldiers of our country who have set the greatest example of selfless service, brotherhood, and love for the country.
Significance of Army Day- 15th January 2021
Back in 1949, the Indian Army got its first Army chief Lieutenant General KM Cariappa who was appointed on 15 January 1949. After taking over the reins of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, he became the first Indian to be appointed as commander-in-chief. Soon he became one of the only two Indian Army officers to hold a five-star rank of Field Marshal. He led Indian forces on the Western front during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1947.
KM Cariappa also adopted a slogan – “Jai Hind” which means “victory of India”.
On this day, the nation pays tribute to the Valour of the brave hearts and thank them for their selfless service.
