Constituted in 1984, IBPS stands for Institute of Banking Personnel Selection. This is an autonomous body, and recruits people for all the public sector banks except SBI and RBI. The governing body of IBPS includes the Reserve Bank of India and Finance Ministry of India and few other government bodies and banks.

The decision making body also includes representation from public banks and insurance companies.

From the late 2000s, the recruitment process of IBPS started taking place entirely on the online platform.

The exams that IBPS conducts are for filling in the positions of Probationary officers (PO), Specialist officers (SO), Clerks and Group A officers & Group B office assistants for the Regional Rural Banks.
