36th National Games 2022: Gujarat is hosting the 36th National Games of India from September 29 till October 12, 2022. After a 7-year break, the nation’s most prestigious multi-sport competition is taking place. Kerala hosted the previous edition in 2015. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the 36th National Games, which were to be held in Goa in 2020.

National Games: History
- With the intention of developing Olympic sports in the country, the National Games in India were first envisioned as the Indian Olympic Games.
- The culmination of this work occurred in 1924, when the ninth edition of the Indian Olympic Games officially began in Lahore, in the province of undivided Punjab. Since then, major national cities have hosted the tournaments every two years.
- Beginning in 1940, the National Games were referred to as the Indian Olympic Games. Athletes compete against one another in a number of sports in this competition from different Indian states.
- The National Games were organized in Lucknow during the early years following independence.
- The duration and regulations of the National Games are decided by the Indian Olympic Association. The National Games are held every two years, however, they are not permitted to be hosted in the same year as the Olympic or Asian Games.
36th National Games 2022: Key Points
- Six cities – Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar — will be hosting the games. Over 8,000 competitors are expected to compete in 36 different sports. The Velodrome in Delhi is hosting only one competition i.e. track cycling.
- The game’s logo features an Asiatic lion with a sporting symbol and the Statue of Unity. Savaj, the Asiatic lion serves as the mascot for the game.
- The Games will be broadcast live on Doordarshan Sports and Prasar Bharti Sports’ YouTube account.
- Due to faction bickering within the federation, the Indian Olympic Association has removed Handball from the list of the National Games adding Mallakhamba and Yogasana in its place this year.
- Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting), Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), Avinash Sable (3000m steeplechase), Murali Sreeshankar (long jump), Bhavani Devi (Fencing), Elavenil Valarivan (shooting), Mehuli Ghosh (shooting), Srihari Nataraj (swimming), Annu Rani (javelin throw) are among the participants taking part in the 36th National Games 2022.
