1.India-assisted Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Handed Over to Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corp
- India-assisted 720 Megawatts Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Power Project has been recently handed to Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) in Bhutan.
- With this project, India and Bhutan have successfully completed four mega hydroelectric power projects. The commissioning of the project has increased Bhutan’s Electrical Power Generation Capacity by 44 per cent.
- The 720 MW project Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Power Project was jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Lotay Tshering in 2019.
2. Benjamin Netanyahu Sworn in as the Prime minister of Israel for a Record 6th Time
- Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn-in as Israel’s prime minister for a sixth time, leading the Jewish state’s most right-wing government to date. Netanyahu, 73, already Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, has the support of 63 lawmakers in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament). In the house, 54 lawmakers voted against his government.
- He returned as prime minister with the formation of his sixth government, which is composed of a number of far-right allies. The lawmakers supporting the new government are all right-wing, including Netanyahu’s Likud party supported by the ultra-orthodox Shas, United Torah Judaism, the far-right Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionist Party, and Noam.
3. US Vice-President Kamala Harris Names Indian-American Rajeev Badyal to the National Space Council Advisory Group
- Vice President Kamala Harris has named Indian American Rajeev Badyal to a key national space advisory group, which is tasked to maintain a robust and responsible US space enterprise and preserve space for current and future generations.
- Badyal, vice-president of Project Kuiper of Amazon, is among the 30 space experts named by Harris to the National Space Council’s Users Advisory Group (UAG). Previously he was the vice president of satellites at SpaceX. He has a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Oregon State University. Harris had named US Air Force Rtd General Lester Lyles as chair of the UAG.

4. Maharashtra became the first state in the country to pass the Lokayukta Bill
- Maharashtra assembly has passed the Lokayukta Bill 2022, which brings the chief minister and council of ministers under the ambit of the anti-corruption ombudsman.
- The bill was passed without discussion as the opposition had staged a walkout over the alleged scam in the Teachers Entrance Test. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the bill a historic legislation. Cabinet Minister Deepak Kesarkar introduced the Bill which has a provision to bring the Chief Minister and the cabinet under the purview of the anti-corruption ombudsman.

5. IAF Successfully Tested BrahMos Missile with 400 km Range from Sukhoi Plane
- Indian Air Force successfully tested the extended range version of the BrahMos Air Launched Missile against the Ship Target in the Bay of Bengal from the SU-30 MKI fighter jet.
- The successful testing of the missile was achieved with the joint efforts of the IAF, Indian Navy, Defence Research and Development Organization, BrahMos Aerospace, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
- The extended-range version of the Supersonic missile was successfully tested by the Sukhoi Fighter.
- The extended range was reported to have increased to 350 km from 290 km.
- The extended range of BrahMos missiles is believed to have the ability to take out targets in the sea 400 km away.
6. Amit Shah Launched “Prahari app” of the Border Security Force in New Delhi
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the ‘Prahari’ Mobile app and Manual of Border Security Force (BSF) in New Delhi. The Prahari App will enable jawans to access personal information and information related to accommodation, Ayushmann-CAPF, and leaves on their mobile.
- Amit Shah has urged the BSF to go through the Vibrant Village Program, they should make efforts towards increasing tourism in the village, making the village self-sufficient with complete facilities.
- The Home Minister also informed that in the last three years, 26 thousand kilograms of narcotics and two thousand 500 arms and ammunition were seized by the BSF.
7. Indian Army inaugurates first ever two-storey 3-D printed dwelling unit
- The Indian Army inaugurated its first 3-D Printed House Dwelling Unit (with Ground plus One configuration) for soldiers at Ahmedabad Cantt. The dwelling unit has been constructed by the Military Engineering Services (MES) in collaboration with MiCoB Pvt Ltd incorporating the latest 3D Rapid Construction Technology. Construction work of the dwelling unit measuring 71 sqm with garage space was completed in just 12 weeks by utilising the 3D printed foundation, walls and slabs. The disaster-resilient structures comply with Zone-3 earthquake specifications and green building norms.
- The 3-D printed houses are symbolic of the modern-day rapid construction efforts to cater for growing accommodation requirements of the Armed Forces personnel. This structure also stands testament to the commitment of Indian Army in fostering the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’.
- The technique utilises a concrete 3D printer that accepts a computerised three-dimensional design and fabricates a 3-D structure in a layer-by-layer manner by extruding a specialised type of concrete specifically designed for the purpose.

8. ‘Statistical Tables relating to Banks in India: 2021-22’- Web publication released by RBI
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) published a web publication on the activities of the Indian banking sector called Statistical Tables relating to Banks in India: 2021-22’ The publication includes details of priority sector advances for scheduled commercial banks, except regional rural banks, together with entity-specific information on the main categories of liabilities and assets, along with their maturity profile, income, and expenses.
- Contingent liabilities and unclaimed deposits are also included, along with capital-to-risk-weighted asset ratios, non-performing assets, exposure to sensitive industries, and so on.
- The consolidated balance statement of rural cooperative banks is also shown, broken down by state.

9. Praveen K Srivastava named as acting Central Vigilance Commissioner
- Vigilance Commissioner Praveen Kumar Srivastava has been appointed as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). He appointment comes after Suresh N. Patel completed his term as the chief of the anti-corruption watchdog Central Vigilance Commission on December 24.
- The commission is headed by a CVC and can have a maximum of two Vigilance Commissioners. Besides Mr. Srivastava, former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Arvind Kumar is the other Vigilance Commissioner. The tenure of a CVC and vigilance commissioner is of four years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years.
- Mr. Srivastava is a 1988-batch (retired) Indian Administrative Service officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He superannuated as Secretary (Coordination), Cabinet Secretariat on January 31 this year.

10. Ashwini Vaishnaw launches ‘Stay Safe Online’ Campaign and ‘G20 Digital Innovation Alliance’
- As part of India’s G20 presidency, the Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Communications and Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw has launched the “Stay Safe Online” campaign and the “G20 Digital Innovation Alliance” (G20-DIA). MeitY, the Nodal Ministry for the G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG), has represented India in numerous working groups and Ministerial sessions during previous presidencies.
- The objective of the ‘Stay Safe Online Campaign’ is to raise awareness among citizens to stay safe in the online world due to the widespread use of social media platforms and the rapid adoption of digital payments. 11. Hardeep Singh Puri Launched Guidelines for City Finance Rankings and City Beauty Competition
- The Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri launched draft guidelines for a new ranking system of cities based on finance and beauty. The competition is aimed at identifying and promoting financially happy cities and improving municipal finances.
- The ministry has divided this competition into four categories based on population — cities with more than 4 million people, cities with one to 4 million people, cities with one lakh to 10 lakh people and then smaller villages.
- Through an all-India finance ranking, the ministry will track the financial performance and capacity of cities to encourage urban local bodies to improve performance.
- They will be judged on resource mobilisation, expenditure performance and fiscal governance. They would also look at a city’s budget per capita, property tax revenue, capital expenditure, digitisation of accounting and auditing timeliness, among other criteria.
- Cities are expected to submit their data to the ministry, based upon which they will be awarded on the national and state levels.

12. Brazil World Cup winner and football legend, Pele passes away
- Brazilian football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, famously called Pelé, has passed away aged 82. He is considered by many as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
- He was instrumental in Brazil’s three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970. He is still the top scorer for Brazil national team with 77 goals in 92 games.
- He retired from Santos in 1974 but a year later made a surprise comeback by signing a lucrative deal to join the New York Cosmos in the then nascent North American Soccer League.
- In a glorious 21-year career he scored between 1,281 and 1,283 goals, depending on how matches are counted. Pele, though, transcended soccer, like no player before or since, and he became one of the first global icons of the 20th century.
- During his career, he became known as “The Black Pearl”.
- Pele was named “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee, co-“Football Player of the Century” by world soccer body FIFA, and a “national treasure” by Brazil’s government.
13. PM Modi’s mother Heeraben dies at 99, PM Modi begin the Cremation rites
- Heeraben Modi (Hiraben Modi), mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away early on Friday (30 December 2023) in an Ahmedabad hospital. Heeraben was 99.
- The news of her passing was announced in a bulletin from the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, where she was taken on Wednesday when her condition began to deteriorate.
- The prime minister arrived at his brother Pankaj Modi’s house in the Raysan village neighbourhood of Gandhinagar, where his mother (Heeraben Modi)’s lifeless remains were kept.
- PM Modi was taken directly to his younger brother’s home after landing at this airport in the morning.
- PM Modi prostrated himself at his mother’s feet and presented her with floral tributes.

14. ‘Bijli Utsav’ organised by REC in Assam as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav
- REC Limited, a Maharatna Company under the Ministry of Power, Govt. of India organized ‘Bijli Utsav’ in Anandapur Gaon of Baksa district and adjoining villages in Assam. Numerous dignitaries such as Shri Katiram Boro, Speaker – Bodoland Territorial Council, Dr. Ashraful Amin – Addl. Deputy Commissioner – Baksa, Shri Khagendranath Sarania, Principal – Anandapur Primary School, Shri Nagen Chandra Das, Retd. Principal – Nehru Anchalik High School, Shri Manasjyoti Pathak, AGM (RE) Baksa – Assam Power Distribution Co. Ltd. (APDCL) and officials from REC Regional Office in Guwahati had graced the occasion.
- The event witnessed speaker sessions by dignitaries and esteemed guests highlighting the consumer rights of electricity, benefits of electricity and the challenges faced during electrification in remote areas and how the quality of life improves with access to power. Beneficiaries from the villages were also invited on stage to share their experience and views on how electricity has transformed their lives.
