1. Union Minister launches “Chunauti” Next Generation Start-up Challenge

  • “Chunauti”, a Next Generation Startup Challenge Contest has been launched by the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad.
  • The contest aims to further boost startups and software products with special attention on Tier-II towns of India.
  • The “Chunauti” contest will identify about 300 startups engaged in identified areas and offer them seed fund of upto Rs. 25 Lakh along with other facilities.
  • For this programme, a budget of Rs. 95.03 Crore has been earmarked by the government for over a period of three years.

2. Kerala Govt commissioned 1st Marine Ambulance ‘PRATHEEKSHA’

  • The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan commissioned the first-ever marine ambulance named ‘PRATHEEKSHA’ at Vizhinjam village of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala.

  • Pratheeksha is first in the series of 3 fully equipped marine ambulance boat built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), for the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala.

3. Japan’s longest-serving PM Shinzo Abe resigns

  • The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe has announced to step down from the post on 28 August 2020, because of the poor health conditions.
  • The 65-year-old had held record 7 years and eight months as leader of the world’s third-biggest economy, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history.
  • Shinzo Abe had been serving as the PM of Japan since 26 December 2012.
  • Prior to this, he had also served as the PM for a short period between July 2006 to September 2007, becoming the youngest PM of the country, elected at the age of 52.

4. 14th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue

  • The 14th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue (DPD) was held virtually. Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar and Permanent Secretary (Defence), Singapore Mr Chan Heng Kee co-chaired the virtual dialogue.
  • During the defence dialogue, both the sides deliberated on issues of bilateral defence engagements between India and Singapore.
  • They also agreed to further improve the security tie-up between the two countries. The Implementing Arrangement on Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Relief (HADR) between India and Singapore was also signed during the defence dialogue.

5. Dwayne Bravo becomes 1st bowler to scalp 500 wickets in T20 cricket

  • West Indies All-Rounder, Dwayne John Bravo became the first bowler in cricket to scalp 500 wickets in Twenty20 matches.
  • He achieved the feat in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 match between his team Trinbago Knight Riders and St Lucia Zouks.
  • Bravo took the wicket of Rahkeem Cornwall (18) to register his 500th wicket. Dwayne Bravo achieved the feat in his 459th match in the shortest format.

6. Sri Lankan cricketer Tharanga Paranavitana retires

  • Sri Lankan Opening batsman, Nishad Tharanga Paranavitana has announced retirement from all forms of International Cricket.
  • He has represented Sri Lanka in 32 Test Matches scoring 1792 runs including two hundreds and 11 fifties.
  • Paranavitana made his debut against Pakistan in February 2009 and played his final game for the national team in November 2012.
  • He is Sri Lanka’s highest ever run-getter in first-class cricket with 12,522 runs.

7. GoI enhances prize money in National Sports Awards

  • The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju has announced an enhancement in the prize money in four of the seven categories of the National Sports and Adventure Awards.
  • He made this announcement on the occasion of the National Sports Day 2020.  The prize money for the Sports Awards was last reviewed in 2008.
  • The prize money for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been increased to 25 lakh rupees from the previous amount of 7.5 lakh rupees.
  • Arjuna Award has been enhanced to 15 lakh rupees from 5 lakh.
  • The Dhronacharya (Lifetime) awardees, who were earlier given 5 lakh rupees will now be given 15 lakh rupees as cash prize, while Dhronacharya (Regular) will be given 10 lakh instead of 5 lakh rupees per awardee.
  • Dhyanchand Awardees will be given 10 lakh rupees instead of 5 lakh rupees.

8. National Sports Day: 29th August

11. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice A.R. Lakshmanan passes away
