1. Legendary athlete PT Usha nominated to Vice-chairman panel
- Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has nominated legendary former athlete PT Usha to the panel of vice-chairperson in the upper house of the Parliament.
- YSRCP member Vijai Sai Reddy has also been nominated along with her. PT Usha was also elected as the president of the Indian Olympic Association recently.
- The 58-year-old Usha, a multiple Asian Games gold medallist and fourth-place finisher in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles final, was declared elected unopposed for the top post in the polls being held under the supervision of Supreme Court-appointed retired SC judge L Nageswara Rao.
2. Jyotiraditya Scindia launched country’s first Green Steel Brand “KALYANI FeRRESTA”
- Union Steel Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia has launched India’s first Green Steel Brand “KALYANI FeRRESTA” in New Delhi.
- This first-of-its-kind steel has been manufactured by a Pune-based Steel company, Kalyani group by using renewable energy resources, leaving zero carbon footprints in the environment.
- Green steel is the manufacturing of steel without the use of fossil fuels. This new phenomenon is about producing steel by using low-carbon energy sources such as hydrogen, coal gasification, or electricity instead of the traditional carbon-intensive manufacturing route of coal-fired plants.
3. Agriculture Ministry Organises Millet Food Festival in Parliament
- To raise awareness about the importance of millet, the Agriculture Ministry is hosting a Millet food festival in Parliament for the members. As the global agrifood systems face challenges to feed an ever-growing global population, resilient cereals like millet provide an affordable and nutritious option.
- The United Nations has passed a resolution declaring the year 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM). The IYM 2023 and the push towards increasing millet production will also contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

4. UAE to Host the 13th WTO Ministerial Meeting in 2024
- The next World Trade Organization ministerial conference will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in February 2024, the global trade watchdog confirmed in a statement. The UAE and Cameroon were both vying to host the event and came to an informal agreement for Abu Dhabi to host the first one and Cameroon to do the next, trade sources said.
- For the UAE, hosting the meeting is part of its own push to position itself as a global hub for business amid growing competition in the Middle East. It has been rolling out bilateral trade deals with fast-growing markets since the pandemic. Next year the Gulf Arab state will host COP28, the UN’s Climate Change conference.
5. Sri Lanka and Russia in talks to use the rupee in foreign trade
- Use of rupee in foreign trade: In order to facilitate international trade, Sri Lanka has agreed to utilize the Indian Rupee (INR). It occurs shortly after the Indian government announced it was looking into ways to include nations who are particularly short on dollars in the Indian rupee trade settlement process.
- The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) clearance is required before the Indian rupee can be designated as Sri Lanka’s official foreign currency, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
- According to reports, banks in Sri Lanka have set up special accounts for trading in INR dubbed Special Vostro rupee accounts, or SVRA.

- Major General Mohit Seth has took over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Counter Insurgency Force Kilo. He took over from Major General Sanjiv Singh Slaria who has been moved to Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur.
- In his distinguished military career spanning over three decades, the General Officer has held various prestigious staff and command appointments in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeast and at the Army headquarters.

7. HDFC Securities Launched Investor Education Platform ‘Roots’
- Stock brokerage firm HDFC Securities has launched Roots, a dedicated platform providing comprehensive investor education and market analysis.
- The site offers multiple forms of valuable information, including articles, bite-sized tips, podcasts by experts, video tutorials and explainers, and live social media feed on the Indian financial markets.
- The biggest USP of the platform is that it produces content which are being searched on Google by current or prospective investors and traders.
8. IDFC FIRST Bank launched ZERO Fee Banking savings accounts
- IDFC FIRST Bank has declared ZERO Fee Banking on savings accounts and waived fees on multiple banking services, including Passbook charges, NEFT charges.
- The bank said that customers maintaining as low as Rs 10,000 Average Monthly Balance, and the Rs 25,000 AMB savings account variant will get these benefits.

9. Nitin Gadkari Launches First-ever ‘Surety Bond Insurance’ for Infrastructure Projects
- Road, transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari launched the country’s first-ever surety bond insurance product, a move that would reduce the dependence of infra developers of bank guarantee.
- Surety Bond Insurance will act as a security arrangement for infrastructure projects and will insulate the contractor as well as the principal. The product will cater to the requirements of a diversified group of contractors, many of whom are operating in today’s increasingly volatile environment.
- The Surety Bond Insurance is a risk transfer tool for the Principal and shields the Principal from the losses that may arise in case the contractor fails to perform their contractual obligation.

10. Indian Forces Acquiring ‘Pralay’ Ballistic Missile for Striking Targets at 150-500 Km
- As the conflicts in the border region with China increase, the Indian armed forces are now set to procure the ‘Pralay’ ballistic missile that can hit the target from 150 to 500 km.
- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the indigenously developed surface-to-surface missile ‘Pralay’, from Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha in December 2021.
- The Pralay missiles combined with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles would be the longest-range tactical weapon system in the defence forces as the long-range strategic weapons are controlled by the strategic forces command.
11. Fifth Scorpene Submarine ‘Vagir’ Delivered to Indian Navy
- The fifth Scorpène submarine, Vagir of Project – 75 Kalvari Class submarines has been delivered to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai. Defence Ministry said, the submarine would shortly be commissioned into the Navy and enhance its capability.
- Project-75 includes the indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design. These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, France.

12. Social Progress Index (SPI) for States and Districts Being Released
- Social Progress Index (SPI) for States and Districts made by the Institute for Competitiveness and Social Progress Imperative was submitted to Economic Advisory Council- Prime Minister and released. Based on the SPI scores, states and districts have been ranked under six tiers of social progress.
- Puducherry has the highest SPI score of 65.99 in the country, attributable to its remarkable performance across components like Personal Freedom and Choice, Shelter, and Water and Sanitation. Lakshadweep and Goa closely follow it with scores of 65.89 and 65.53, respectively. Jharkhand and Bihar scored the lowest, 43.95 and 44.47, respectively.

- The Ministry of Ayush issued a notification regarding the status of the centres of excellence scheme ‘AYURSWASTHYA Yojana’. Financial assistance is provided to eligible individual organizations/institutes for establishing and upgrading their functions & facilities and/or for research & development activities in AYUSH under the scheme.
- To support the establishment of advanced/ specialized AYUSH medical health units in reputed AYUSH and Allopathic institutions both in Government and Non-Government sectors.
- To support creative and innovative proposals for the establishment and upgradation of both functions and facilities of reputed institutions to strengthen competencies of AYUSH professionals in education technology, research & innovation and such other fields necessary for the promotion of AYUSH at national as well as international levels.

15. Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurates Good Governance Week 2022
- Union Minister for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Dr. Jitendra Singh has inaugurated Good Governance Week celebrations from 19-25 December2022 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
- Offering his homage to India’s former Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, in whose memory the Good Governance Day and Good Governance Week are celebrated. The Minister also launched a five-day “Prashasan Gaon Ki Ore” a nationwide Campaign, to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

16. Lance Naik Bhairon Singh Rathore passes away
- Lance Naik Bhairon Singh Rathore, a BSF veteran and hero of the 1971 India-Pakistan War, passed away in Jodhpur at the age of 81. The BSF veteran’s bravery at Rajasthan’s Longewala post during the war was portrayed by actor Suniel Shetty in the Bollywood movie ‘Border’. He served in the 14th BSF unit during the war and retired from service in 1987.
- The operations room of 12 Infantry division had received a telegram, warning that Pakistan may launch a huge offensive and raid the border outpost on 3 or 4 December, 1971.
- He was awarded the Sena Medal in 1972 for his bravery.

17. J&K’s Bandipora hosts the first-ever Tribal Winter Festival
- A first-of-its-kind Tribal Winter Festival was held in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. The festival is organised by the district administration in collaboration with various departments at Ketson, the festival witnessed huge public participation. The festival witnessed music, dance, and cultural events that left the people enthralled.
- People from the Kashmiri community, Gujjars and Bakerwals danced together to the beats of dhol (drum) in a unique portrayal of cultural unity in diversity. The ‘gatka’ was another attraction performed by two tribal communities portraying the fighting spirit of the Gujjars amid all geographic, social and political odds.
