1. India’s longest river cruise to Sail from Varanasi in January 2023

  • The government is set to launch the world’s longest luxury river cruise from Varanasi to Dibrugarh via Bangladesh next year. The world’s longest luxury river cruise aims to give a push to Indian inland waterways development.
  • The 50 days cruise will set sail from Varanasi and pass-through Kolkata and Dhaka before reaching Bogibeel in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. The cruise will sail on 10th January 2023 and will cover a distance of 4,000 km.
  • The world’s longest luxury river cruise or the Ganga Vilas cruise will sail from Varanasi to Dibrugarh in the longest river journey of 50 days.

3. India Announces Additional Contribution of ‘$ 5 million’ to ASEAN-India S & T Fund

  • India announced an additional contribution of USD 5 million to the ASEAN-India science and technology fund to enhance cooperation in sectors of public health, renewable energy and smart agriculture.
  • The announcement came during the three-day visit of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to Cambodia for ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. He addressed the ASEAN-India summit.
  • Vice President Dhankhar highlighted the global concerns on food and energy security, and emphasised the role of the East Asia Summit (EAS) mechanism in promoting free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific with freedom of navigation and overflight.
  • ASEAN-India Science & Technology Collaboration formally started in 1996 with the establishment of the ASEAN India S&T working group (AIWGST).
  • Initially, the collaborative S&T projects and activities between India and ASEAN were supported through ASEAN India Fund (AIF) but in 2008, a dedicated ASEAN India S&T Development Fund (AISTDF) with an equivalent amount of USD 1 million was established jointly by the Ministry of External Affairs and Department of Science and Technology (DST) to support R&D (Research and Development ) projects and associated project development activities.

  • New Zealand’s Greg Barclay unanimously re-elected as the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman for another two-year term after his rival, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani, pulled out of the contest late. Barclay, who served his first stint as ICC chair between 2022 and this November, will now be in the position until 2024.
  • Barclay, an Auckland-based commercial lawyer, was originally appointed as the ICC Chair in November 2020. He was previously the Chair of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and was a director of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015. In July, Barclay publicly expressed his desire to continue for a second term.
  • Besides Barclay’s re-election, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah was elected as the head of ICC’s all powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee at the board meeting.   • The country’s fifth largest public sector bank, Union Bank of India, marked its 104th foundation day on 11 November 2022, after being founded on 11 November 1919 and having its first head office inaugurated by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. 7. Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) Tops PSU lenders’ list in Q2 Credit Growth

  • The second quarter of 2022–23 saw the Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) outperform other public sector lenders in terms of percentage loan growth. According to public sector bank issued quarterly data, the lender saw a 28.62 percent increase in gross advances at the end of September 2022, totaling Rs 1,48,216 crore.
  • Union Bank Of India came in second with an increase of 21.54 percent to Rs 7,52,469 crore. The largest lender in the nation, State Bank of India, took third place with an 18.15% increase in gross advances.

8. Per Capita Income Rose in Real Terms by 33.4% Since Enactment of NFSA: Centre to SC

  • Per capita income of population in India has increased in real terms by 33.4 per cent since the enactment of National Food Security Act (NFSA) in 2013, the Centre has told the Supreme Court. The Union government said this rise in per capita income of people has taken a large number of households to higher income class.
  • Referring to the increase in per capita income, the Centre said the upper limit of 75 per cent for rural and 50 per cent for urban population who were considered vulnerable in 2013-14, would have gone down considerably.
  • The Act provides for coverage of up to 75 per cent of the rural population and up to 50 per cent of the urban population for receiving subsidised foodgrains under Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS).

9. India’s Industrial Output Jumps 3.1% in September

  • India’s industrial output, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew 3.1 per cent in September, supported by a double-digit increase in electricity generation. This is compared with a contraction of 0.8 per cent in the previous month and a growth of 4.4 per cent in September 2021.
  • According to the latest data from the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, the country’s industrial production during April-September 2022 jumped 7 per cent, compared with 23.8 per cent in the year-ago period.
  • India’s electricity sector output grew in double-digits at 11.6 per cent year-on-year to 187.4 on the IIP in September, mining saw a 4.6 per cent jump to 99.5, and manufacturing posted a 1.8 per cent rise to 134.3, according to the official data.

10. Indian Navy Conducts ‘Prasthan’ an Offshore Security Exercise

  • The Indian Navy conducted a structured exercise to evaluate organizational effectiveness in protecting offshore assets off Mumbai on an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) platform 150 km into the sea. The exercise was named ‘Prasthan‘ by the Indian Navy.
  • Prasthan is conducted twice a year under the aegis of Headquarters, Western Naval Command. The exercise which is conducted every six months aims to integrate the efforts of all maritime stakeholders involved in offshore defense.
  • The ‘Prasthan’ which is an offshore security exercise aims to examine various measures and protocols conceived to address security threats and other contingencies.
  • The Indian Navy has included several crises such as bomb threats, blows out, fire, Terrorists, and medical evacuations during the exercise.

11. India to Build its First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Catamaran Vessel

  • Cochin Shipyard signed an MoU with the Inland Waterways Authority of India to build the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel for Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Another MoU was signed by the Shipyard for the construction of six electric catamaran vessels for Uttar Pradesh and two more such vessels for Guwahati.
  • The MoU by the Shipyard was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
