1. 65th National Film Awards- Complete List of Winners

i. The 65th National Film Awards were announced in Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. The chairpersons of the three juries (Feature, Non-feature and Writing) for the National Film Awards have announced the awards for the different categories.
ii. This year, the jury is being headed by director Shekhar Kapur. The jury panel has 10 members. National Film Awards will be given by the President Ram Nath Kovind in May 2018.

2. PM Modi Inaugurates Dr Ambedkar National Memorial

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Dr Ambedkar National Memorial in New Delhi. The memorial is dedicated to the life and contributions of Dr. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution.
ii. The memorial has an exhibition area, meditation hall with the Buddha Statue and 12 feet high bronze statue of Dr Ambedkar. It is equipped with a sewerage treatment plant, a rainwater harvesting System and rooftop solar energy.
3. NHAI Signs Agreement for its 1st International Project

i. The National Highways Authority of India has signed an agreement for the upgradation of Yagyi – Kalewa section of highway in Myanmar to two lanes with an earthen shoulder. The aim is to provide seamless vehicular movement for enhancing trade, business, health, education and tourism among India, Myanmar and Thailand.

ii. The project has been funded by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and would be executed on EPC mode at a cost of Rs.1177 crores.

4. Late Veteran Actor Vinod Khanna Awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award

i. Veteran Hindi film actor Shri Vinod Khanna was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema. This was announced during the 65th National Film Awards. 
ii. Some of the other prominent winners in various categories for this year National Film Awards included Assamese movie ‘Village Rockstars’ in Best Feature Film category and ‘Baahubali – The Conclusion’ in the Best Popular Film providing Wholesome Entertainment category. The Feature Film Central panel was headed by Shekhar Kapur.

5. President 3-Nation Visit: Completes Final Leg in Zambia, Returns India

i. President Ram Nath Kovind has returned to New Delhi after three African nations tour of Equatorial Guinea, Swaziland and Zambia. Mr Kovind and his Zambian counterpart Edgar Chagwa Lungu laid the foundation stone of Lusaka traffic Decongestion Project.
ii. The cost of the 93-km road is 289 million dollar India is providing 250 million dollars. The project will be completed in three years. This project is aimed at redesigning the major road network for Lusaka city with a view to reducing traffic jam, travel distance and saving fuel.

6. Index of Economic Freedom 2018: India Ranks 130th, Hong Kong Tops

i. India has jumped 13 places in the last one year to 130th spot in the latest annual Index of Economic Freedom released by a top American think-tank the Heritage Foundation.
ii. As per the latest Index of Economic Freedom, China has jumped one spot to 110th and Pakistan is now at 131 position.
iii. The top 3 countries in the list are-
1. Hong Kong
2. Singapore
3. New Zealand.

  • In 2017, India with a score of 52.6 points was ranked at 143 among 180 countries, two spots below neighbour Pakistan.

7. CWG 2018: Tejaswini Sawant Wins India’s 5th Shooting Gold

i. Tejaswini Sawant won India its fifth shooting gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning the women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions Finals in Gold Coast, Australia.

ii. This was 37-year-old Tejaswini’s second medal at the 2018 edition, after winning silver at the women’s 50m Rifle Prone. India’s Anjum Moudgil won silver at the event, after having topped qualification.


8. CWG 2018: Anish Bhanwala Becomes India’s Youngest CWG Gold Medalist

i. Fifteen-year-old shooter Anish Bhanwala became India’s youngest gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, winning the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Finals with a record score at Gold Coast, Australia.

ii. India’s Neeraj Kumar stood fifth at the event. Anish, who is participating in his first Commonwealth Games, won gold at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney 2017.

9. Naman Tanwar Wins India’s 1st Boxing Medal

i. Nineteen-year-old Naman Tanwar won India its first boxing medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze in the men’s 91 kg category.
ii. Naman lost out to Australia’s Jason Whateley in the semifinal of the event to secure the bronze. India has won a total of 35 medals, including 16 golds, 8 silver and 11 bronze medals so far.



10. Bajrang Punia Wins His 1st CWG Gold

Current Affairs 13th April 2018: Daily GK Update |_12.1
i. Wrestler Bajrang Punia won his first Commonwealth Games gold medal, defeating Wales’ Kane Charig by technical superiority in the men’s freestyle 65 kg final in Gold Coast, Australia.
ii. This is India’s fifth medal in wrestling in this edition, with Rahul Aware and Sushil Kumar registering gold wins earlier. Bajrang had won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
