1 May – International Labours day
International Labour Day, also known as International Worker’s Day or May Day is observed on 01st of May every year to promote and encourage the international labour associations.
3 May – Press freedom day
Every year, 3rd May is celebrated as the World Press Freedom Day. It is celebrated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). To evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
2 May – World Asthma Day
World Asthma Day 2017 will be celebrated all across the world on 2nd of May (1st Tuesday of May), on Tuesday. World Asthma Day is a big event celebrated all over the world by the people to increase the awareness among public worldwide about the precautions and preventions of asthma. This event is annually organized on an international level by the GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma) in order to increase the asthma awareness all around the world.
8 May – World Red Cross Day
World Red Cross day means 8th of May is celebrated every year as the birthday anniversary of the founder of the Red Cross. Henry Dunant was the founder of the Red Cross as well as the founder of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), born in the Geneva in the year 1828. He was the most famous person and became the recipient of 1st Nobel Peace Prize. The theme for this year (2017) is “Less Known Red Cross Stories”.
11 May – National Technology Day
On 11th May 1998 India achieved a major technological breakthrough by successfully carrying out nuclear tests at Pokhran. Also first, indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” was test flown at Bangalore on this day and India also performed successful test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day. This year the National Technology Day is marked as “Technology for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth”.
17 May – International Telecommunication Day
The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. 17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The theme for WTISD-17, “Big Data for Big Impact”.
22 May – International Day for Biological Diversity
The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for 2017- Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism.
24 May – Commonwealth Day
Peace-building was the Commonwealth’s theme for 2017. The Commonwealth is one of the world’s oldest political associations of states. In 1949, the Commonwealth came into existence, and since then, independent countries from Africa, America, Asia, Europe and the Pacific have joined.
31 May – Anti Tobacco Day
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. In the past twenty-nine years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.
