International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is also a reminder of the many obstacles women faced and how they excelled despite the hurdles. International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Women today occupy important positions in all walks of life. They have made their contribution in all arenas; they are challenging the social norms and trying to shatter the elusive glass ceiling.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2017 is ‘Be Bold for Change’. The campaign calls on people to work towards a better working world – a more gender inclusive world. The idea of this theme is to build momentum for new Sustainable Development Goals of achieving gender equality and ensuring inclusive and quality education for all.
